People tell you that the British are stand-off-ish. We didn't normally find this to be the case. In England, Wales and Scotland, we found they were cheerful, friendly, helpful, courteous and chatty.
Wherever we were, we had no problems striking up a conversation with people - in pubs, restaurants, cafes, car parks, hotels, lifts, etc. They were always interested in hearing about our holiday and we learned lots about them too. They were more than happy to give us advice about places to visit.
One of the advantages of staying at a B&B is that you get to talk to the owners. Another advantage is that you get to meet other people who are staying there too.
